This painting - which marks the departure from academic classical forms to a complete Impressionist rendering - is one of the rare ones conserved in a public collection. Impressionism is not only limited to Monet, Renoir, and Degas. With its probing depiction of its sitters mental state, the painting exemplifies Morisots sensibility. It was while copying Old Masters in the Louvre that she had met her future husband Flix Bracquemond - a well-known art director at the Haviland Porcelain Shop - who, overshadowing her, was primarily responsible for Bracquemonds omission from Art History books because he didnt approve her chosen medium. Marie Bracquemond did not enjoy the same financial support which allowed her peers to flourish creatively and commercially. Pittsburgh-born Cassatts audacity to draw masterfully was one of many conventions the artist broke in her lifetime. Edma Morisot (1839-1921) was the older sister of the French Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot. During her travels throughout the continent she learned under academic mentors such as Jean-Lon Grme and douard Frre and studied classical masterpieces by Correggio, Velzquez, Rubens. The backhanded compliment apparently didnt hinder Cassatts confidence or success, and she triumphantly recounted the remark years later in a letter to the director of the Carnegie Museum of Art when the painting entered its permanent collection. In 1874, she joined the "rejected" Impressionists in the first of their own exhibitions, which included Paul Czanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley. By the late 1870s, Morisot was recognised in the press as holding a central place in Impressionism, but her innovative aesthetic was seen as a result of her feminine vision. No woman has the right to draw like that, Degas reportedly said upon viewing Cassatts Young Women Picking Fruit (1891). Morisot died of pneumonia in 1895, at the age of 54, leaving behind an oeuvre that hints at the furtherbreakthroughs she was poised to make. She constantly struggled for perfection, as she confessed, in 1930, in her autobiography entitled Background with Figures. Helen McNicoll (1879-1915) was one of the most profoundly original female artists in Canada who, as a cosmopolitan painter, played an important role in spreading Impressionism in a country where the new movement was little known.
